Giving back - The following is a summary of just some of the things that we at Straight Skate have done to support and promote skateboarding in Corpus Christi during 2008
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SKATESHOP BECAUSE WE SUPPORT YOU
2008 Activities
• During the course of 2008 put out many messages (to over 2,000 people through our Myspace and our e-mail list) urging support for the 2008 Bond to improve Corpus Christi Parks – specifically those proposals that would enhance skateboarding
• Free Skateboarding Classes at Cole Skatepark – for 18 weekends April through August - Participated with CC Parks & Recreation Department and held free skateboarding classes for ages 12 and under. We provided a minimum of 4 instructors and 2 assistants every Saturday. Over 300 individual youths attended the classes throughout the summer.
• During the course of 2008 we have given away over 2,000 free Strange Notes DVD’s with the purchase of decks and other items.
• Had several meetings with members of the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department concerning installing mini sk8 areas in some of the grass parks in the city. These are simply concrete slabs that could be used for all urban type sports (including sk8boarding)
• Sponsored the Hurricane Alley Roller Derby(girls)team
• November 22 – Some team members to Laredo, TX for SK8 Contest sponsored by Exodus SK8shop – Jordan placed 1st and Osmar placed 3rd.
• November 20 - Donated Shop Complete and hats to radio station C101's Bowling for Turkeys
• October 31 – Creature Night At STR8SK8 – to celebrate Halloween we had an open sk8 jam in our parking lot for 3 hours using our gear (quarter pipes, boxes, rails) with goofy contests and great prizes from Creature Skateboard
• October 7 – Took our gear (quarter pipes, boxes, rails) to Oso Community center for a free SK8 night in support of National Neighborhood Night Out.
• August 16 – SK8 del Sol – STR8SK8 coordinated the SK8 contest, set up street area (quarter pipes, boxes, rails, kickers), Street Contest, Highest Ollie, Longest Manual; we aquired and gave away over $5,000 in prizes to the winners of all the contests and for throw-outs. Sponsored the Guapo Skate Team from Dallas to judge the skate contest. Jordan got 2nd place in his group.
• August 16 – Krux Kickflip Challenge – STR8SK8 sponsored this national contest for the first time ever in Corpus Christi.
• August 3 - Donated $40 worth of gift certificates to Lindale Recreational Center
End Of Summer Bash
• August 3 – Video Premier Party – “and Now” with free food and prizes
• July 29 - Donated items worth $65 to Yeager Elementary School Tigerfest
• July 26 – Raffled off two free tickets to the Tony Hawk show at Concrete Street
• July 26 – Team to Portland SK8park at 5AM to film TV promo for Channel 3 about the Tony Hawk show performing in Corpus
• July 12 – Took Team and gear (quarter pipes-boxes-kickers-rails) to Kingsville Ollie Games, donated prizes – Daniel got 2nd in his group.
• June 21 – Booth in the C101 RockU event – Team did a demo from 2PM until 6PM – Cory got pic in Caller
• June 21 – Set up gear for a SK8 session at OSO Community Center – Go SK8 Day
• June 21 - Raffled off two free tickets to Sevendust Concert at Concrete Street
• June 18 – did a Team demo at Gregory, TX at the GIVE activity for kids for the Gregory Parks Dept.
• June 17 – Kim made a 3 minute presentation to City Council on Cole Park SK8park attendents
• May 5 - Donated a shop complete to the StPius X school Summer Fest Auction
• May 3 – Public Broadcast System KEDT Auction - donated complete shop board and a complete mini with 1 hr lesson
• May 2 - Partnered with Spitfire to produce shop wheels in concert with our shop trucks from Thunder and our shop bearings from Ninja
• April 26 – Shop was featured in CallerTimes for an article about skateboarding safety
• April 12 – First Free Sk8 Class at Cole Park with CC Parks and Recreation Department
• April 5 – Kiwanis Kids Day at Cole Park – Set up our street gear and had well over 200 skaters & thousands of kids
• March 13 - For the MDA charity JP was"locked up' and then bailed out
• March 8 – Graffiti Art Project – set up our street gear on Starr St. and did a ongoing demo for 5 hours. Skating was open to local sk8rs and even some BMX
• March 8 – donated deck to Yummies of Portland for charity car show
• March 8 - Portland SK8jam sponsored withover $300 in prizes - Jordan & Isaish won 1st place
• Feb 24 Shop was featured in an article in Caller Times about the CC SK8park - JP quoted frequently
• Feb 24 3rd sKILLs session – 12 team members at Portland SK8park
• Feb 17 2nd sKILLs session – 7 team members at Portland SK8park
• Feb 17 - Went on KTOV-TV Chill with Phil to clearify Cole Park lighting/helmet policies and need for action on 2008 bond proposal
• Feb 03 - Raffled off two free tickets to WWE wrestling smack down
• Team activities – almost every month throughout the year there is a Team Skate, where all members of the team get together at different skateparks each month for a SK8 session.
